Host parents, I thought you might like to read about some ideas for Holiday gifts from host families to their au pairs.
Please treat your au pair as you would want someone else to treat your children in another country. If celebrating Christmas, please include a few gifts under the tree for your au pair from you and your children. It always creates great memories for your au pair if you get her/him a stocking to hang up with the rest of the family’s. If celebrating Hanukkah, please include your au pair in your food and festivities.
You can spend what you like, but keep in mind, they will likely only have one Christmas/Hanukkah with you, and they take care of our most important “possession”.
Christmas can be a very difficult time for au pairs. Even the most independent au pairs can be very sad to be away from family and home, so please encourage them to include traditions from their country with your family! Remember too, that they have to take all presents home at the end of the year, so consider giving gifts that are not too big, too heavy, etc.
Gift Suggestions: scarf, hat, socks, pajamas, gift cards to their favorite stores, cafes, restaurants or movie theater, Cal shirts (or shirts from any sports team they like), mixed CD of music you play a lot in your home, scrapbook & related stickers (like San Francisco or travel), travel journal, lotions, California or American themed gifts, food from their home country, a Christmas ornament, photos of the au pair & family or children together, small local snow globe, tickets to shows/events, personalized calendar from Shutterfly, digital frame, water bottle, something the kids make, little American flag, charm bracelet with charm, Sephora gift card, or a nice style necklaces on Etsy.
And here are some ideas from other host moms:
